APPROACHProcess and business development has, like any other business, fashions, isms and buzzwords which come and go. All of them bring something into the toolbox but looking deeper and with practical experience the work itself pretty much has stayed the same. We see that some main principles have proven to stand the test of time. First of all, the improvement starts understanding the real gaps between the desired performance and the existing one. This means that real root causes and gaps, no matter how detailed or simple they might be, need to be identified. This requires analysis, mathematical and logical capabilities to understand causalities. A lot of foot work. Second, the needed corrective actions must be bold enough and based on proven process practices. In this the long and wide practical experience is a must. Business requirements, system limitations and possibilities and organizational issues cannot be separated. Third, there is not much value to just tell what should be done. Our principle is to take responsibility and an active leading role in implementation. This we do in most of our projects and it has resulted in long and successful partnerships. |
STORYI had the great opportunity to design and implement one of the first LEAN solution in Finland as my masters thesis work at Kone Elevators in 1991-1992. It was a success and I was asked to work with similar projects at ABB as well. Both asked me to work with them. As a solution I ended up 1995 establishing Muutostuuli Oy (Wind of Change) with some colleagues from Helsinki University of Technology (Industrial Management). First years we worked mainly at Finnish factories in their efforts to survive the tough economical recession that faced Finland in the early 1990’s. We were lucky to be selected right away to work with leading Global companies such as Kone, ABB and Nokia. Gaining experience from those mainly productivity improving and lead time reduction exercises proved to be a solid basis for future challenges. Global exercises soon followed logically as we joined our customers’ larger development programs and efforts. Good examples are global delivery processes and measurements harmonisations at German, Finnish, Indian and Chinese factories or certain supplier network localisations to China or India. The second wave of LEAN started in the early 2000’s and kept us busy for several years. The most profound improvement using LEAN principles was during a 7 years Lean Road at one Shanghai factory. It really made it through to World Class. Also the public sector was developed and that work expanded in the early of 2010's; we looked for solutions to the cities of the Capital area. Processes were redesigned, new operational models were developed ans new systems was implemented. We analysed, calculated and presented different solutions for management. Radical and step by step changes were implemented. In the end of 2010's we delivered some projects concerning renewable energy. We developed an application (2ndDegree) to help planning an energy independent community (off grid island), we calculated profitability of small solar and wind power systems and needs of materials in a powerplant of solarheat. Even if the business has been very international, we have also been working with our loyal local Finnish customers. We have been able to bring in the global business experience, the differences in environments and performance into the discussion. In recent years we have also helped smaller new or growing companies in their processes, strategies and growth plans. Our experience covers wide range of businesses and cultures. From Shanghai to Washington and from Oulu to Torino. From Crime Investigation to Insurance Companies. From public administration to global industries and logistics all around the globe. We look forward to continue to the next 25 years quartal!
